The Commandments Musical

The Commandments are now set to music verbatim from the King James Bible. The words are God's own, written to his creation, you and I. The Commandments are foundations for moral laws since the beginning of mankind. If we commit to memory and obey the Ten Commandments and the two great commandments, no other laws would be needed and love and peace would prevail. We can build a world with love, obeying his commandments. The music is available for all to use as public domain.

Here I Stand, Ten Commandments Music

This is a new recording by Judy Rogers in honor of former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore. Judy Rogers’s song - Here I Stand - reflects the need to recognize the sovereignty of God's laws through all generations and captures the essence of the spiritual conflict in America today. - Judge Roy Moore Judy composed and sang the song first at a fund raiser for Frontline Ministries (Col. E. Ray Moore, www.ExodusMandate.org) in Columbia, SC, at which Judge Moore was the keynote speaker. The Chief has since invited Judy to sing at several other events. Isaac Watts versified the Ten Commandments

Prolific hymn writer Isaac Watts versified the Ten Commandments as well as the sum and the first and second great commandments in his book Divine and Moral Songs for Children. Isaac Watts gave scriptural and historical precedence to teaching morality to children in verse in the preface to Divine and Moral Songs for Children.

Verse was at first designed for the service of God, though it hath been wretchedly abused since. The ancients among the Jews and the Heathens taught their children and disciples the precepts of morality and worship in verse. The children of Israel were commanded to learn the words of the song of Moses, Deut. xxxi. 19, 30; and we are directed in the New Testament, not only to sing " with grace in the heart," but to "teach and admonish one another by hymns and songs," Ephes. v. 19. --Isaac Watts

The Ten Commandments

Moses and the Ten Commandments in Isaac Watts book

1. Thou shalt have no more Gods but me.
2. Before no idol bow thy knee.
3. Take not the Name of God in vain:
4. Nor dare the Sabbath-day profane.
5. Give both thy parents honour due.
6. Take heed that thou no murder do.
7. Abstain from words and deeds unclean:
8. Nor steal, though thou art poor and mean
9. Nor make a wilful lie, nor love it.
10. What is thy neighbour's dare not covet.

The Sum of The Commandments

With all thy soul love God above;
And as thyself thy neighbour love.

Duty to God and Our Neighbor

Love God with all your soul and strength,
With all your heart and mind;
And love your neighbor as yourself:
Be faithful, just, and kind.

Deal with another as you'd have
Another deal with you:
What you're unwilling to receive,
Be sure you never do.

The Ten Commandments Christian Music Page

"At a time when people are assaulted with an array of propositions claiming to give success, excitement, and fulfillment in life, Kathy Schallert recalls our attention to the claim of the Creator God. In her musical presentation of the Ten Commandments Kathy brings listeners to a provocative yet loving encounter: the faultiness of human autonomy "carefronted" by the wisdom and holiness of God. The Christian’s claim to hold the law in high regard does not automatically insulate the believer from the multitude of neutralizing and antagonistic voices and influences. We may attend bible studies and worship services yet be far from God's purposes in the remainder of our lives.

Kathy's musical compositions have been conceived through her personal experience and relationship with God. The presentation gives one a sense of receiving a prophetic exhortation rather than a musical concert. The variety of musical mediums complements the nuances of God's ten timeless principles. To help those within your sphere of influence to develop a clearer perception of God's morality, I heartily recommend Kathy Schallert's musical presentation of the Ten Commandments." Now here I am years later sitting in this Camp Meeting listening to Walter Pearson preaching about the song of Moses and the Lamb! As he quoted the words from Revelation 15, I became overwhelmed with emotion. I was remembering back to the day when I had asked how the song of Moses and the Lamb goes and was holding tightly to the promo cassette tape in my hand when I realized for the first time that the song on my promo tape was taken from Revelation 15:3 and 4! I couldn’t believe it! I felt the tears streaming down my face and could barely control my sobs. I had wanted to learn that song years earlier and now I realized for the first time that God had allowed me to compose and record a song with those very words in it and I didn’t even realize it!!! Just as I thought I might be getting control over my emotions Pastor Pierson began to talk about singing the Ten Commandments. I was all ears! He explained how God had told Moses to instruct the children of Israel to sing the Ten Commandments!!! You see, it was just a few weeks prior that I had finished those first 4 Commandment songs..

The Ten Commandments by Martin Luther

In 1524, Martin Luther wrote a choral (German hymn) based on the Ten Commandments titled "Dies sind die heil'gen zehn Gebot'" ("These Are the Holy Ten Commands"). Richard Massie translated the song to English in 1854. The song is sung to an old German tune dating back to about 1200.

Here are the lyrics, with Luther's original German and Massie's English translation side by side. Source: The Cyber Hymnal. Tune is also available at the Cyber Hymnal.

Dies sind die heil’gen zehn Gebot’,
Die uns gab unser Herre Gott
Durch Mosen, seinen Diener treu,
Hoch auf dem Berg Sinai.
Kyrioleis!

Ich bin allein dein Gott der Herr,
Kein’ Goetter sollst du haben mehr,
Du sollt mir ganz vertrauen dich,
Von Herzengrund lieben mich.
Kyrioleis!

Du sollt nicht brauchen zu Unehr’n
Den Namen Gottes, deines Herrn;
Du sollt nicht preisen recht noch gut,
Ohn’ was Gott selbst red’t und thut.
Kyrioleis!

Du sollt heil’gen den siebent’ Tag,
Dass du und dein Haus ruhen mag,
Du sollt von dei’m Thun lassen ab,
Das Gott sein Werk in dir hab’.
Kyrioleis!

Du sollt ehr’n und gehorsam sein
Dem Vater und der Mutter dein,
Und wo dein Hand ihn’n dienen kann,
So wirst du lang’s Leben han.
Kyrioleis!

Du sollt nicht toedten zorniglich,
Nicht hassen noch selbst raechen dich,
Geduld haben und sanften Muth
Und auch dem Feind thun das Gut’.
Kyrioleis!

Dein’ Eh’ sollt du bewahren rein,
Dass auch dein Herz kein andere mein’,
Und halten keusch das Leben dein
Mit Zucht und Maessigkeit fein.
Kyrioleis!

Du sollt nicht stehlen Geld noch Gut,
Nicht wuchern Jemands Schweiss und Blut;
Du solt aufthun dein’ milde Hand
Den Armen in deinem Land.
Kyrioleis!

Du sollt kein falscher Zeuge sein,
Nicht luegen auf den Naechsten dein,
Sein’ Unschuld sollt auch retten du
Und seine Schand’ decken zu.
Kyrioleis!

Du sollt dein’s Naechsten Weib und Haus
Begehren nicht, noch etwas d’raus,
Du sollt ihm wuenschen alles Gut’,
Wie dir dein Herz selber thut.
Kyrioleis!

Die Gebot, all’ uns geben sind,
Dass du dein Suend’, o Menschenkind,
Erkennen sollt, und lernen wohl,
Wie man für Gott leben soll.
Kyrioleis!

Das helf’ uns der Herr Jesus Christ,
Der unser Mittler worden ist:
Es ist mit unserm Thun verlor’n,
Verdienen doch eitel Zorn.
Kyrioleis!

That man a godly life might live,
God did these Ten Commandments give
By His true servant Moses, high
Upon the Mount Sinai.
Have mercy, Lord!

I am thy God and Lord alone,
No other God before Me own;
Put thy whole confidence in Me
And love Me e’er cordially.
Have mercy, Lord!

By idle word and speech profane
Take not My holy Name in vain
And praise but that as good and true
Which I Myself say and do.
Have mercy, Lord!

Hallow the day which God hath blest
That thou and all thy house may rest;
Keep hand and heart from labor free
That God may so work in thee.
Have mercy, Lord!

Give to thy parents honor due,
Be dutiful, and loving, too,
And help them when their strength decays,
So shalt thou have length of days.
Have mercy, Lord!

Kill thou not out of evil will,
Nor hate, nor render ill for ill;
Be patient and of gentle mood,
And to thy foe do thou good.
Have mercy, Lord.

Be faithful to thy marriage vows,
Thy heart give only to thy spouse;
Thy life keep pure, and lest thou sin,
Use temperance and discipline.
Have mercy, Lord!

Steal not; oppressive acts abhor;
Nor wring their life blood from the poor;
But open wide thy loving hand
To all the poor in the land.
Have mercy, Lord.

Bear not false witness nor belie
Thy neighbor by foul calumny.
Defend his innocence from blame;
With charity hide his shame.
Have mercy, Lord!

Thy neighbor’s house desire thou not,
His wife, nor aught that he hath got,
But wish that his such good may be
As thy heart doth wish for thee.
Have mercy, Lord!

God these commandments gave therein
To show thee, child of man, thy sin
And make thee also well perceive
How man unto God should live.
Have mercy, Lord!

Help us, Lord Jesus Christ, for we
A Mediator have in Thee.
Our works cannot salvation gain;
They merit but endless pain.
Have mercy, Lord!

Of course, Massie's version is a singing translation that fits with the music, not an exact literal translation of what Luther wrote. For example, the first stanza would literally be translated like this (which doesn't rhyme or fit with the tune so well):

These are the holy ten commands,
Which our Lord God gave to us
Through Moses, his true servant,
High on the Mount Sinai.
Lord, have mercy!

Ten Commandments Music brings you these weekly verses:

Psalm 1

The Way of the Righteous and the End of the Ungodly
1 Blessed is the man
         Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
         Nor stands in the path of sinners,
         Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
         And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He shall be like a tree
         Planted by the rivers of water,
         That brings forth its fruit in its season,
         Whose leaf also shall not wither;
         And whatever he does shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so,
         But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
         Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
         But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
